The events organized and supported by the LIGHT2015 project will start on Sunday 21 June with a Networking Event with Light Refreshments that will take place before the ECBO-CLEO/Europe 2015 International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) Special Plenary Session on Super-Resolved Fluorescence Microscopy that will welcome the 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry Laureates Stefan Hell and Eric Betzig.

One of the highlights of the World of Photonics Congress is the Opening Ceremony that will be held on Monday 21 June at 9.00am, which it is supported by the LIGHT2015 project. The event entitled “Light Solutions for the Society Challenges of our World” will focus on how light and light-based technologies are of uttermost importance for the development of society. The session will be moderated by the IYL 2015 Steering Committee Chair John Dudley and will be comprised by addresses from high-level speakers such as Dr. Flavia Schlegel, Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences (UNESCO), that will give a welcome address focused on how the IYL 2015 will highlight the importance of science for sustainable development; Wolfgang Boch – Head of the Photonics Unit of the European Commission will talk about the European perspective of the  IYL 2015; Dr. Lawrence S. Goldberg, Senior Engineering Advisor in the Division of Electrical, Communications and Cyber Systems, Directorate for Engineering, at the National Science Foundation, will present an overview of the American perspective of the IYL 2015; and Dr. Yanne K. Chembo, ERC Starting Grand Laureate, Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS) Paris, African Physical Society, will give a presentation about the IYL 2015 from the point of view of Africa.

It is expected that the event will be attended by Ministers and/or Science and Economic Attachés from selected member states of UNESCO, Nobel Price Laureates and scientific dignitaries that are keynote and plenary speakers at World of Photonics Congress (Theodor Hänsch, Serge Haroche, Frederico Capasso, Stefan Hell, Eric Betzig), CEOs from exhibiting companies at the LASER World of Photonics Trade Fair, Presidents and CEOs of relevant associations and CEOs and Presidents of IYL 2015 Founding Partners / Patron Sponsors.

During the week, the LIGHT2015 Awards to Young Women in Photonics and Young Entrepreneur in Photonics will be presented. First, the Awards will be briefly presented at the CLEO Europe-EQEC 2015 Plenary Session and Awards Ceremony on Tuesday 23 June in the morning. And the following day, on Wednesday 24 June, the LIGHT2015 Awards Ceremony will be held from 4.00pm to 4.30pm, where the LIGHT2015 Awards recipients will have the possibility to take their prizes and give a short acceptance speech.

The remaining LIGHT2015 events will be dedicated to the promotion of Careers in Photonics. A Student Networking Lunch event, co-sponsored by SPIE, will be held on Wednesday 24 June and will give the possibility to PhD students attending the congress to discuss about careers in photonics and optics with senior scientists.

A Panel Discussion on Careers Choices (co-sponsored by SPIE) will complete the LIGHT2015 events during the Congress. The panel will be comprised by a talk from John Dudley, IYL 2015 Steering Committee Chair and Professor at the University of Franche-Comté (France), that will give a talk entitled “Surviving in Sience: What they don’t tell you about careers in Research!” The talk will be followed by a panel with professionals from a variety of fields in optics and photonics.

About LIGHT2015

LIGHT2015 is a European project funded through the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme of the European Commission. It aims to promote the importance of photonics to young people, entrepreneurs and the general public in all Member States of the EU during the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015 (IYL 2015).

LIGHT2015 activities will include LIGHTtalks, a series of inspirational events, which will take place throughout the European Union in different cities at different times for the whole duration of the project in order to bring photonics closer to students and entrepreneurs. A specific series of events targeted to local industry and entrepreneurs, will take place during the period 25-28 September 2015 to take advantage of the international “100 Hours / Weekend of Light” of the global IYL 2015 programme.

Another highlight of LIGHT2015 will be a community experiment on smartphone photonics where thousands of participants from throughout the EU will carry out optical measurements of the sky to yield information related to air pollution. To aid teachers and to inspire student, Photonics kits will be distributed to schools around Europe to support the scientific education at secondary schools.

LIGHT2015 Partners include the European Physical Society (EPS), the European Optical Society (EU), the Institute of Photonics Sciences (ICFO), Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI) the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI), Universiteit Leiden and EYESTvzw.
